What Is Entropion?

Entropion is a situation in which the skin and eyelashes come in contact with the eye surface because the eyelid turns inward. This condition can lead to severe discomfort and irritation if it isn’t taken care of in a timely manner. Those who suffer from entropion may have their eyelids in this position for almost all the time or it might only be during the times when they shut their eyes too hard or blink.
Entropion is usually seen in older people and usually affects the lower eyelid. The condition is also known as eye retraction and gradually becomes more painful as the skin continuously stays in touch with the cornea.

HOW WILL YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ENTROPION?

If you are not sure whether you have entropion or not, but you feel as if there is something wrong with your eyes, it is important to get in touch with an experienced medical professional. The symptoms of entropion are also listed below to give you an idea of what to expect if you’re suffering from it.

• Your eye will become reddish.

• You will have a constant feeling that there is something present in your eyes and causing you to feel discomfort.

• You will experience some irritation in your eyes and if the condition worsens, you might also experience pain.

• You will experience a lot of mucus discharge as a result, there will be eyelid crusting.

• Your eyes will tear up uncontrollably.

• You may experience common Infections of the cornea.

• You will face sensitivity to wind and light and in the worst scenario, you might even face a slight loss of vision.

WHAT ARE THE REASONS BEHIND ENTROPION?

Entropion might result from a number of different reasons, some of which are explained below.

• With age, the skin all over your body will become loose and begin to sag. This is also the case for the eye lid muscles as they will slacken and sag as you grow older. Loose skin tissue and weakened muscles will be present around your eyes and this sometimes results in the inward folding of the lower eyelid.

• Entropion is sometimes congenital too, that is, a baby can be born with this condition. However, the chances for this are very low and are not seen in many people.

• There is an eye disease known as trachoma, which is very common in the countries of Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Entropion is one of the symptoms of trachoma. This infection is transmitted through shared items and flies.

• Another major cause of entropion is if you have recently had any surgery that has altered the shape of your eyes. Chemical burns also result in entropion.

• Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus or HZO is a type of herpes infection that happens in the eye. Entropion is one of its symptoms.

• There is also an autoimmune disease known by the name of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid that leads to inflammation of eyelids and leads to entropion.
